Golf Course Superintendent
Golf Course in Longs, South Carolina is looking for a Golf Course Superintendent.
Position Overview:
Responsible for overseeing all aspects of golf course maintenance and groundskeeping, ensuring that the course is kept in prime condition for play. The role involves managing a team of grounds staff, budgeting, planning for seasonal requirements, and implementing best practices for turf management, pest control, irrigation, and landscape aesthetics. The position will also work closely with other departments, including the golf operations team, to coordinate course usage and maintain high standards for both playability and aesthetic appeal.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Course Maintenance and Turf Management
o Oversee the care and maintenance of all areas of the golf course, including fairways, greens, tees, roughs, bunkers, and landscaping.
o Implement and manage a comprehensive turf management program, including mowing, aeration, fertilization, irrigation, and pest control.
o Monitor and assess soil conditions and turf health to ensure optimal growth and playing conditions.
o Manage pest and disease control programs, ensuring they are compliant with environmental regulations and best practices.
o Maintain the health of the grass and plant life by ensuring proper irrigation and applying treatments as needed.
2. Irrigation Management
o Oversee the operation and maintenance of the irrigation system to ensure efficient water distribution across the course.
o Regularly check and adjust irrigation schedules based on weather conditions, seasonal changes, and course requirements.
o Troubleshoot and repair any issues with the irrigation system, such as broken sprinklers or faulty timers.
o Ensure the efficient use of water resources while maintaining the quality of turf and plant life.
3. Staff Management and Leadership
o Supervise, train, and manage a team of groundskeepers and maintenance personnel, ensuring they are equipped to perform daily tasks and long-term maintenance projects.
o Create schedules for staff, assign tasks, and ensure adequate coverage for course maintenance, especially during peak hours.
o Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and organize training to ensure a high level of professionalism and skill development.
o Foster a positive work environment by promoting teamwork and efficiency.
4. Budgeting and Financial Management
o Develop and manage the maintenance budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources for labor, equipment, fertilizers, pesticides, and other course maintenance needs.
o Identify areas for cost savings without compromising course quality and performance.
o Track expenses and maintain accurate records for all purchases and maintenance activities.
o Ensure adherence to budgetary constraints while maintaining high-quality course conditions.
5. Course Setup and Playability
o Coordinate with the Director of Golf Operations or Head Professional to ensure the course is set up for daily play, including marking tees, flags, and hole locations.
o Adjust course conditions based on weather and tournament requirements (e.g., course setup for special events, tournaments, or member competitions).
o Monitor course playability on a daily basis, adjusting maintenance schedules to minimize disruption to golfers and optimize conditions.
6. Equipment Management
o Oversee the proper maintenance and repair of all equipment used in course maintenance, including mowers, tractors, aerators, and irrigation systems.
o Ensure that all equipment is well-maintained, properly stored, and replaced on a timely basis.
o Maintain an inventory of all equipment and supplies and make recommendations for new equipment purchases as needed.
7. Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability
o Ensure that course maintenance practices comply with local environmental regulations and industry best practices for sustainability.
o Implement eco-friendly practices, such as reducing pesticide and fertilizer use, utilizing organic or environmentally safe products, and conserving water resources.
o Maintain native plant species and landscape aesthetics that enhance the course’s visual appeal while supporting local wildlife.
8. Collaboration with Other Departments
o Work closely with Head Professional to coordinate course maintenance with golf play, including adjusting maintenance schedules during busy periods or special events.
o Communicate regularly with management about course conditions, weather-related issues, and upcoming maintenance needs or plans.
o Ensure effective communication with the food and beverage department regarding any event-specific needs that may impact course conditions, such as outings or tournaments.
9. Health and Safety Compliance
o Ensure all staff follow proper safety procedures, including the correct handling and storage of chemicals, fertilizers, and equipment.
o Comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and other local health and safety regulations.
o Conduct safety training and inspections to ensure that all personnel are aware of safety protocols and that the course and equipment are safe for staff and players.
10. Tournament and Event Support
• Work closely with the golf operations team to prepare the course for tournaments, charity events, and corporate outings, ensuring the course is in top condition for these events.
• Adjust maintenance schedules as necessary to accommodate special events, making sure that greens, tees, and fairways meet the required standards for tournament play.
11. Reporting and Communication
• Provide regular updates to General Manager regarding the status of the course, maintenance issues, and the condition of equipment and facilities.
• Maintain records of all maintenance work performed on the course, including fertilization, irrigation, pest control, and equipment servicing.
Requirements:
Agronomy Bachelor’s degree preferred.
5 years of golf course Assistant Superintendent or 3 years of golf course superintendent.
Compensation:
$65,000 – $75,000 per year.
